Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative to move the UK tax system online. It means keeping digital records and submitting your VAT or income tax returns using compatible software – no more paper records or manual submissions.
If you run a VAT-registered business, you already need to follow MTD rules. From April 2026, self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 will also be required to comply. It’ll expand to more businesses over the next few years.

If you’re going DIY, here’s what you’ll need:
A Government Gateway account for your business (you can create one during the process if you don’t already have one)
Your business details like VAT number or UTR
